So.... Sunday my son who is 7 asked me what the word gay meant. I asked him how he heard that word, where did he hear it etc.
Apparently, he had heard it at school.
Ok.... I am thinking.... thinking..... this is crucial because my dad and brother are gay. It appeared to me he just wanted to know if it was a bad word or not. (Meaning if he could use that word... like he cannot call other people stupid etc.) So, not wanting him to think it is a bad word, but needing to find the balance between the definition and the teasing of others....
I started off with this.... "Well, some people are tall, some are short. Some have curly hair, some have straight hair. Some people have dark skin, others have light skin right?"
He agrees.... so I think I am getting somewhere.
I go on... "Well, people come in all shapes and sizes right?" He said "Yes. Some are fat and some are thin."
Long pause. I am thinking.
"Ok, well some people are straight and some are gay. And how you heard your friends using that word is not ok. I am sure it was said in a mean way, so please don't use that word that way. Ok?"
"Ok mom."
Hours later, relaying this conversation to my husband, the then goes upstairs to ask our son what gay meant. What is my son's answer?
"It means you're fat."
